Description

An ode to a nearly obsolete pattern. Our screens have changed sizes and even locations, but the color bars have remained persistent.

It was conceived by Norbert D. Larky and David D. Holmes of RCA Laboratories and first published in RCA Licensee Bulletin LB-819 on February 7, 1951. Early televisions needed much more in the way of constant tuning, which meant this guideline helped owners test for the curve of the picture, the overall focus, and the shading.
